I cross-reference poetry and utility through ceramic vessels, seating and lighting. I use abstract expression as a world-building exercise to explore what dynamic, imaginative and safe spaces look like for me existing as a Black woman in the diaspora. I work with clay as a personal metaphor for this world-building; minerals and chemicals forming the fundamental components of planets and stars; heat and spontaneous reaction causing crystallization and ultimate transformation. My recent work speaks to communal grouping, presence and rest through the form of stools.
My background in biology and product design introduce a perspective in functional objects that speak through organic matter. Through form and surface technique, I interpret natural elements such as plants, rocks and waterbodies. This interest in nature also extends itself as vessels pouring out canvas-like folds of thin slabs; challenging ceramics obvious association as a static medium to be one full of fluidity, life and motion. My interest in fluidity stems from exploring narratives of waterbodies and the people they connect to in Accra, Ghana.
My pieces are three-dimensional canvases for abstract composition; opting for smooth surfaces or rugged textures to capture the essence of water, fiber, muddied sediment and the gesture of my hands.
